Cord blood stem cells aim to tame rheumatoid arthritis in early trial

NCT ID NCT04971980

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This early-stage study tests a one-time intravenous infusion of stem cells derived from donated human umbilical cords in 9 adults with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded well to standard treatments. The main goal is to check safety and tolerability, while also measuring whether the treatment can reduce joint inflammation and disease activity. Because rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition requiring ongoing management, this approach aims to control the disease rather than cure it.
