Can your own stem cells repair heart attack damage?
NCT ID NCT01652209
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether injecting a patient's own bone marrow stem cells into the heart's arteries could improve heart function after a heart attack. 90 adults with reduced heart pumping ability were randomly assigned to receive either stem cells plus standard care or standard care alone. The main goal was to see if the stem cell group had better heart function after 13 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Autologous bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (Hearticellgram-AMI)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a way to improve heart function and reduce damage after a heart attack, potentially lowering the risk of heart failure.
What could go wrong
This trial is completed but results are not yet widely confirmed. Stem cell therapies can have variable effects, and benefits may be modest or not apply to all patients.
