Cord blood stem cells aim to tame transplant complication

NCT ID NCT03158896

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-stage study tested whether stem cells from donated umbilical cords are safe for people with a serious condition called acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD), which can happen after a bone marrow transplant. Twenty-four adults received one of two doses of these stem cells. The main goal was to see if the treatment caused serious side effects, and researchers also looked for signs that it helped control the disease.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

umbilical cord stem cells (Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells)

What this could lead to

If this works, it could point toward a new treatment option for a serious complication of bone marrow transplants, helping control the immune attack on the body.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small phase 1 trial with only 24 people, so it is mainly checking safety, not effectiveness. The stem cells may not work, and there are risks of side effects from the infusion.
