Scientists grow 'Mini-Guts' to unlock secrets of bowel disease

NCT ID NCT02874365

Summary

This study aimed to better understand how the gut repairs itself in people with inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn's or colitis) and a condition called familial polyposis. Researchers grew tiny 3D models of the gut, called organoids, from small tissue samples taken during routine colonoscopies. By studying these 'mini-guts,' they hoped to learn how specific stem cells and their growth pathways differ in these diseases compared to healthy people.
