Potential cure for devastating childhood diabetes tested in new trial

Summary
This study is testing a potential cure for children with a rare, severe form of type 1 diabetes caused by an immune system defect. Doctors will first give children a transplant of umbilical cord blood stem cells to fix their immune system. If that works, they will then receive a transplant of insulin-producing islet cells to try to restore their body's ability to control blood sugar.
