Summary

This study is for children with a rare form of type 1 diabetes that also involves a weak immune system. Doctors first transplant umbilical cord blood stem cells to rebuild the immune system, then transplant islet cells to help the body make insulin again. The goal is to see if this approach can restore natural insulin production and reduce or eliminate the need for daily insulin injections.
