Can simulated baby training save newborn lives in nepal?

NCT ID NCT07574944

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a simulation-based training program for newborn care providers in Nepal can improve their skills in resuscitation and kangaroo mother care. The training uses a low-cost baby simulator and includes ongoing mentoring. Researchers will compare knowledge and skills of 240 providers from hospitals that receive the training versus those that continue usual care. The goal is to see if this approach can reduce preventable newborn deaths from birth asphyxia and hypothermia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Simulation-based training using Helping Babies Breathe and NeoNatalie simulator, plus mentoring

What this could lead to

If successful, this training program could be scaled to reduce preventable newborn deaths in resource-limited settings.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small trial in one region of Nepal, and results may not apply elsewhere. The study measures provider skills, not directly patient outcomes, so real-world impact is uncertain.
