Shower power: standing to pee may cut pain and catheter returns after surgery

NCT ID NCT07372547

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether standing in the shower instead of sitting on the toilet helps women urinate more easily after having a catheter removed following vaginal surgery. The goal is to see if this position reduces pain, lowers the amount of urine left in the bladder, and decreases the chance of needing the catheter put back in. One hundred women will be randomly assigned to either stand in the shower or sit on the toilet for their first urination after catheter removal.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
voiding position (standing in shower vs sitting on toilet)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to reduce pain and lower the risk of needing a catheter again after gynecologic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants. The benefit may be small or not apply to all women, and standing in the shower may not be practical for everyone.
