Heart attack oxygen boost trial halted early

NCT ID NCT04743245

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether giving extra oxygen directly to the heart for 60 minutes after angioplasty could improve outcomes for people having a major heart attack. Only 17 patients were enrolled before the study was stopped early. The goal was to see if this oxygen therapy could reduce heart damage and complications like death, repeat heart attacks, or heart failure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hyperoxemic supersaturated oxygen (SSO2) therapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reduce heart damage and complications after a major heart attack.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early with very few participants, so results are limited. The added oxygen therapy may not improve outcomes and could increase bleeding risk.
