Splint or exercise? new study aims to settle best treatment for thumb tendonitis
NCT ID NCT06995534
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compares two common conservative treatments for De Quervain's tenosynovitis, a painful thumb tendon condition: a static hand-wrist splint versus home-based exercise therapy. Forty adults with acute or subacute pain will be tracked for changes in pain, wrist function, and tendon swelling. The goal is to find which approach works better so doctors can offer clearer, evidence-based guidance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
static hand-wrist splint and home-based exercise therapy
What this could lead to
If this trial succeeds, it could point toward a clearer, evidence-based first-choice treatment for De Quervain's tenosynovitis, reducing pain and improving hand function without surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is also no guarantee that either treatment will prove clearly better than the other.
