Back surgery showdown: is simpler surgery just as good?

NCT ID NCT02348645

First seen May 13, 2026 ยท Last updated May 13, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a large, full-scale trial comparing two common back surgeries is feasible. The two surgeries are decompression alone (simpler) and decompression with fusion (more complex). The study enrolled 70 adults with lumbar spinal stenosis and a related condition called spondylolisthesis. The main goal was to see if patients would agree to be randomly assigned to one surgery and if the study procedures worked, not to determine which surgery is better.
