Could a common sedative save lives and prevent delirium in older ICU patients?

NCT ID NCT06251375

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study looks at whether the sedative drug dexmedetomidine, given early to older patients (65+) on breathing machines in the ICU, can reduce deaths and confusion compared to a placebo. About 300 participants will receive either the drug or a dummy treatment, and researchers will track survival, days free of coma and delirium, and kidney health. The goal is to find a safer way to keep patients comfortable while on life support.
