New scan could spot breast cancer protein without needle

NCT ID NCT03991260

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed study tested a new radioactive imaging agent called 99mTc-ADAPT6 to see if it can detect HER2 protein in breast cancer tumors using SPECT scans. Sixteen women with primary breast cancer received a single injection, followed by scans over six hours. The goal was to compare the imaging results with standard biopsy tests to see if the agent can accurately identify HER2 status.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Technetium-99m-labelled ADAPT6

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a non-invasive way to determine HER2 status in breast cancer, potentially guiding treatment without needing a biopsy.

What could go wrong

This was a very small, early-phase study with only 16 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The imaging agent may not accurately distinguish HER2-positive from HER2-negative tumors.
