Sore throat Shake-Up: could pharmacists replace doctors for antibiotic decisions?
NCT ID NCT06114706
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether having nurses or pharmacists, instead of doctors, do the first assessment for a sore throat can reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. Researchers will compare how often each type of health professional follows official guidelines. The goal is to see if changing who sees the patient first can safely cut down on antibiotics for sore throats.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that shifting initial sore throat assessments to nurses or pharmacists safely reduces unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. Results may not apply outside Sweden, and differences in patient flow may not change prescribing habits as hoped.
