New combo attack on returning prostate cancer shows promise

NCT ID NCT03796767

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing whether surgery and radiation can help men whose prostate cancer has come back and spread to a few spots in the body. About 20 participants will receive either surgery to remove the spread tumors or targeted radiation, or both. The main goal is to see if this approach can lower PSA levels by at least half six months after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgery (metastasectomy) and radiation therapy (hypofractionated radiation, IMRT, stereotactic body radiation therapy)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way to control recurrent prostate cancer that has spread to a few spots, potentially delaying disease progression.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves surgery and radiation, which carry risks like infection, pain, or damage to nearby tissues.
