Can a text message help prevent suicide? new study tests digital safety plans
NCT ID NCT07365579
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether an automated text-messaging program can help young adults (ages 18-24) who have suicidal thoughts create and use a personalized safety plan. The program sends daily messages about coping strategies, crisis resources, and support networks over four weeks. Researchers want to see if this approach is acceptable and feasible for a larger future trial. Participants are randomly assigned to start the program right away or first receive simple crisis resource texts.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
text messaging based safety planning intervention
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a scalable, low-cost tool to help young adults manage suicidal thoughts and access crisis support.
What could go wrong
This is a small feasibility study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is not a substitute for emergency care.
