Can a simple online visit help rural smokers kick the habit?
NCT ID NCT05764759
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether an electronic visit (e-visit) can help people in rural areas quit smoking. Participants are randomly assigned to receive the e-visit or standard care. The e-visit asks about smoking history and preferences, and may lead to a prescription for quit-smoking medication. The trial involves questionnaires and breath tests over 24 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
smoking cessation e-visit (online questionnaire and prescription recommendation)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, scalable way to help rural smokers quit, reducing cancer disparities.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (288 people) testing a behavioral intervention, not a drug. Success depends on participants' motivation and follow-through, and results may not apply to all rural populations.
