First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a smartphone app designed to motivate smokers who are not interested in quitting within the next 30 days. Over 14 days, the app provides counseling, education, reminders, and gamification to help users become more ready to quit. Researchers will track changes in readiness, quit attempts, and actual smoking cessation in 382 participants from Ontario.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a scalable, low-cost tool to help smokers move toward quitting, potentially reducing smoking rates.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, single-region trial with subjective outcomes. The app may not lead to actual quitting, and results may not apply to other populations.
