Smart crutches could revolutionize fracture recovery

NCT ID NCT07138066

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether special crutch tips with sensors can help heal a specific type of shinbone fracture. Thirty people who had surgery for a broken tibia will use the smart crutches for up to 24 weeks. The crutches give real-time feedback to guide how much weight to put on the leg, based on CT scans and computer models. Researchers will compare healing time, pain, and fear of movement against standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Smart Crutch Tips™ (sensor-equipped crutch attachments with real-time feedback)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to faster and more reliable healing of tibia fractures, helping people return to walking sooner with less fear of movement.
What could go wrong
This is a small early study with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The personalized approach may not speed healing more than standard care, and using the device daily could be inconvenient.
