Sleep drug trial aims to protect Seniors' minds after major surgery
NCT ID NCT06192615
Summary
This study is testing whether a medication called dexmedetomidine, given at night to help patients sleep, can prevent delirium (sudden, severe confusion) in older adults after heart surgery. It will involve 1,800 patients aged 60+ who are having heart surgery and will stay in the ICU. The goal is to see if better sleep leads to clearer thinking, fewer complications, and a faster recovery.
