Could a quick ultrasound replace CT scans for Kids' skull fractures?
NCT ID NCT07636902
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a bedside ultrasound can accurately detect skull fractures in children aged 6 and under who have minor head injuries with a scalp bruise. Researchers will compare ultrasound results to a standard CT scan in 150 children. If ultrasound proves reliable, it could offer a faster, radiation-free alternative for diagnosis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Skull point-of-care ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe, radiation-free way to diagnose skull fractures in children, reducing the need for CT scans.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic accuracy study, not a treatment trial. Ultrasound may miss some fractures, and results may not apply to all head injuries.
