Liver cancer radiation therapy may open door to transplant
NCT ID NCT07663487
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a radiation treatment called SIRT (selective internal radiation therapy) using tiny radioactive beads delivered directly to liver tumors. The goal is to shrink tumors enough so that patients with liver cancer can qualify for a liver transplant or have surgery to remove the cancer. The study will include 78 adults with liver cancer who are not candidates for standard treatments like surgery or heat ablation. Researchers will track how many patients become eligible for transplant or surgery within 6 months of treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Y-90 resin microspheres (SIR-Spheres)
What this could lead to
If successful, this treatment could help more liver cancer patients become eligible for a life-saving liver transplant or surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 study with only 78 people. The treatment may not work for everyone and carries risks like fatigue, abdominal pain, and liver function changes.
