Hospital checklist aims to curb HIV in drug users
NCT ID NCT05480956
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a simple checklist and peer coaching program for people who inject drugs and are hospitalized with serious infections. The goal was to see if these tools could help start HIV prevention medication (PrEP) and addiction treatment. Sixty HIV-negative adults with opioid use disorder took part. The study focused on whether the approach was acceptable and feasible, not on final health outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this model could improve HIV prevention and addiction treatment access for rural people who inject drugs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed feasibility study with 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so impact is limited.
