First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new, gentler stem cell transplant for children with sickle cell disease using a combination of drugs and low-dose radiation. The goal is to cure the disease with fewer side effects than standard transplants. About 100 children will receive a transplant from a healthy sibling donor.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Alemtuzumab, low-dose total body irradiation, and sirolimus
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a safer, curative stem cell transplant for children with sickle cell disease, reducing long-term health problems.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 2 trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all. Risks include graft rejection, graft-versus-host disease, and infection.
