Kids' broken arms: could a shorter cast be just as good?

NCT ID NCT05156749

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a short-arm fiberglass cast works as well as a long-arm cast for stabilizing certain forearm fractures in children aged 4 to 16. The goal is to see if the shorter cast provides enough support while being more comfortable. About 120 children with Salter Harris I or II fractures will be randomly assigned to one of the two casts.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

fiberglass cast (short-arm or long-arm)

What this could lead to

If the short-arm cast works as well as the long-arm one, children with these fractures could have more freedom and comfort during healing.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 120 children, so results may not apply to all cases. There is a risk that the short cast may not hold the bone as securely.
