Shockwave therapy could ease lipedema symptoms in new trial

NCT ID NCT07240415

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding shockwave therapy to standard care (like compression and massage) can reduce pain and swelling in women with lipedema. Fifty women aged 18-65 with early-stage lipedema will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care alone or standard care plus shockwave therapy twice a week for four weeks. Researchers will measure changes in limb size, pain, and quality of life over eight weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, non-invasive option to ease pain and improve quality of life for women with lipedema.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 people. The shockwave therapy may not provide significant extra benefit over standard care, and results may not apply to all lipedema patients.
