First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study explores whether having shingles (herpes zoster) raises the risk of vascular dementia, a type of memory loss caused by poor blood flow to the brain. Researchers will compare 375 adults with and without shingles, analyzing tiny particles in their blood called exosomes for signs of blood vessel damage. Participants with shingles will be followed for one year, while the control group has just one visit. No new treatments are tested—only standard care is provided.
