Timing of nerve block may improve recovery after breast removal surgery
NCT ID NCT07661212
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving a nerve block (serratus anterior plane block) before or after mastectomy surgery leads to better recovery and less pain. Eighty women having a mastectomy will be randomly assigned to receive the block either before the surgeon makes the first cut or after surgery ends. The main goal is to see which timing results in a better quality of recovery 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If timing matters, this could help doctors choose the best moment to give a nerve block, leading to less pain and faster recovery after mastectomy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-hospital study with 80 people. The difference between groups may be small or not meaningful in practice.
