Simple exercises may sharpen shoulder sense after breast cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT07316283
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding sensorimotor training exercises to standard physical therapy could improve shoulder joint position sense in women who had a mastectomy. Forty-six women aged 35-55 were split into two groups: one received the extra exercises, the other standard therapy only. The goal was to see if the exercises help the brain better sense where the shoulder is, which could improve movement and function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
sensorimotor training exercises
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could improve shoulder awareness and function after mastectomy, helping women regain better arm control.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 46 participants. Results may not apply to all women, and the exercises require supervision, limiting at-home use.
