Could a diabetes drug protect kidneys in type 1 diabetes?
NCT ID NCT05822609
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether semaglutide, a drug already used for type 2 diabetes, can reduce kidney damage in people with type 1 diabetes and diabetic kidney disease. About 60 adults will receive either semaglutide or a placebo for 26 weeks. Researchers will measure changes in urine protein levels and kidney function to see if the drug helps protect the kidneys.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- semaglutide
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new treatment to slow kidney damage in people with type 1 diabetes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Semaglutide can cause side effects like nausea and vomiting, and its safety in type 1 diabetes is not fully known.
