Summary

This trial tests whether a smartphone app called SelfBack can reduce disability from low back pain in healthcare workers like nurses and assistants. The app creates personalized weekly plans with exercises, walking goals, and education based on user input and step data. Participants are assigned to either use the app alongside usual care or receive usual care alone. The study measures changes in back-pain-related disability over three months, with follow-ups up to a year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
SelfBack app, a smartphone-based digital decision-support system providing personalized weekly self-management plans (exercises, walking goals, education)
What this could lead to
If effective, the app could offer a scalable, low-cost way to help healthcare workers manage and prevent low back pain, reducing disability and sick leave.
What could go wrong
This is a non-randomized trial, so results may be influenced by differences between groups. The app's benefits beyond usual care are uncertain, and adherence may vary.
