New sedation strategy aims to cut delirium in ventilated kids
NCT ID NCT04801589
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 25 times
Summary
This study compares two sedative medications—dexmedetomidine and midazolam—in children aged 44 weeks to 11 years who are on breathing machines in the ICU. The goal is to see which drug reduces delirium (a form of temporary brain dysfunction) and improves recovery, including time on the ventilator and long-term thinking and behavior. About 372 children will participate, and results may help set a new standard for safer sedation in pediatric intensive care.
