New radiation approach aims to control inoperable rectal cancer recurrence

NCT ID NCT07297004

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase II trial is testing whether a high-precision radiation technique called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) can help control locally recurrent rectal cancer that cannot be surgically removed. The study will enroll 40 adults aged 18-75 with unresectable tumors and no distant spread. The main goal is to see if SBRT can improve the chance that the cancer does not grow for at least one year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a non-surgical option to control tumor growth in patients with recurrent rectal cancer that cannot be removed by surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 40 participants and no comparison group. The expected improvement in local control is modest (from 20% to 40%), and results may not apply to all patients.
