Spit test could spot gum disease early
NCT ID NCT07025291
First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 04, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study looked at whether three substances found in saliva—HIF-2 alpha, MMP-9, and TRAP-5b—can help tell the difference between healthy gums, gingivitis (mild gum inflammation), and periodontitis (serious gum disease). Researchers measured these substances in 60 adults who were non-smokers and otherwise healthy. The goal was to see if these biomarkers could be used as a simple, non-invasive diagnostic tool for gum disease.
