Spit, Don't swab: new study aims to make virus testing less painful for kids
NCT ID NCT07350291
First seen Jan 23, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 16 times
Summary
This study looks at whether using saliva (spit) samples can accurately diagnose respiratory viruses in children, instead of the standard but painful nasopharyngeal aspirate (a deep nose swab). The trial will involve 502 children under 2 years old with breathing problems. If saliva works as well, it could make testing much less stressful for kids and their families.
