New nerve block may ease pain after prostate surgery
NCT ID NCT06962085
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a nerve block (injecting numbing medicine near the tailbone) can reduce pain and the need for opioid painkillers after transurethral prostate resection (TURP) surgery. Sixty men undergoing TURP were split into two groups: one received the nerve block plus standard anesthesia, the other received only standard anesthesia. Researchers measured pain scores and opioid use for 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bupivacaine and lidocaine (local anesthetics)
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this nerve block could reduce pain and the need for strong painkillers after prostate surgery, leading to a smoother recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, completed study with 60 participants. The block may not work for everyone, and there are always risks like bleeding or infection with any injection.
