New drug strategy may reduce blood transfusions after organ transplants
NCT ID NCT03515447
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether giving romiplostim, a drug that boosts platelet production, could reduce the need for platelet transfusions in patients with low platelet counts after heart or lung transplantation or use of heart/lung support devices. Researchers compared a group of 30 patients who received this strategy to a historical group. The goal was to see if fewer transfusions were needed in the first 28 days after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
romiplostim
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce the need for platelet transfusions after heart or lung transplantation, potentially lowering transfusion-related risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, non-randomized before-after study with only 30 patients, so results may not apply broadly. The strategy may not work for all patients or could have unforeseen side effects.
