Robots vs. electricity: which helps Parkinson's patients walk better?

NCT ID NCT07589296

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests two extra therapies added to standard exercise rehab for people with Parkinson's disease: robot-assisted walking training and electrical stimulation of the thigh muscle. Forty participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups and undergo treatment five days a week for six weeks. Researchers will measure balance, walking ability, and muscle changes to see which approach works best.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

robot-assisted gait training and quadriceps neuromuscular electrical stimulation

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show which rehab approach works better for improving walking and balance in Parkinson's disease.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to all Parkinson's patients. The interventions are add-ons to standard rehab, not a cure.
