New combo therapy aims to stop kidney damage in membranous nephropathy

NCT ID NCT00977977

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether combining two immune-suppressing drugs, rituximab and cyclosporine, can safely reduce protein leakage in the urine of people with membranous nephropathy, a kidney disease where the immune system attacks the kidneys. About 30 adults with persistent high protein in their urine will receive both drugs over 6 months, with follow-up for up to 2 years. The goal is to see if this combo can help more patients achieve remission and protect their kidneys from further damage.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Rituximab and cyclosporine

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option for membranous nephropathy, potentially reducing protein in urine and protecting kidney function.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both drugs suppress the immune system, which can increase infection risk and other side effects.
