Surgeons test artificial valve to stop diarrhea after colon cancer removal

NCT ID NCT07167420

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new surgical procedure called RISE that rebuilds the ileocecal valve during right colon cancer surgery. Normally, removing this valve can cause diarrhea and malnutrition. The trial will randomly assign 188 patients to either receive the valve reconstruction or standard surgery. Researchers will compare how quickly patients form solid stools and track complications to see if the reconstruction helps.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
RISE ileocecal valve reconstruction (a surgical procedure)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce chronic diarrhea and malnutrition after right colon cancer surgery, improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 188 participants. The added surgical step may increase operation time or complications, and long-term benefits are not yet proven.
