Can a new program stop elder abuse before it happens?

NCT ID NCT07368257

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a program called RISE, when added to standard Adult Protective Services (APS), can better protect older adults from abuse or self-neglect. About 300 participants aged 60+ who are at risk or already experiencing harm will be assigned to either APS alone or APS plus RISE. Researchers will track repeat investigations and emotional well-being over six months to see if the combined approach works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

RISE behavioral intervention (restorative approaches, motivational interviewing, teaming, supported decision making)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a proven way to reduce repeat cases of elder abuse and self-neglect, helping older adults feel safer and more supported.

What could go wrong

This is an early replication study, not a large late-stage trial. The intervention may not work as well in new locations, and results depend on consistent implementation across different settings.
