First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will survey 6,000 staff working in Swedish nursing homes and home care services to measure how often elder abuse occurs and what factors contribute to it. The goal is to use this information to design a program that prevents abuse. The study focuses on different types of abuse, including psychological, physical, sexual, financial, and neglect, and looks at abuse by staff, relatives, and between residents.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could identify key factors behind elder abuse in long-term care, paving the way for an intervention to prevent it.
What could go wrong
This is an observational survey, not a treatment trial. It measures reported abuse, which may be underreported, and results may not apply outside Sweden.
