Liver patients get new hope: drug may stop brain fog after TIPS procedure

Summary

This study tested whether the drug rifaximin could prevent serious brain confusion (encephalopathy) in people with cirrhosis who had a TIPS procedure to lower blood pressure in the liver. About 211 adults took either rifaximin or a placebo daily. The goal was to see if the drug could reduce the risk of this brain complication, which affects about 35% of patients after TIPS.
