New hope for liver cancer patients when immunotherapy stops working

NCT ID NCT07495579

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests two oral drugs, lenvatinib and regorafenib, in 146 adults with advanced liver cancer that cannot be surgically removed and has worsened after initial immunotherapy. The study has two parts: one for patients with better liver function and one for those with reduced liver function. Researchers will measure how long the drugs can control cancer growth and monitor side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lenvatinib or regorafenib

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a new treatment option for people with advanced liver cancer whose first immunotherapy-based treatment stopped working.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial, so it is still early. The drugs may not work as hoped, and side effects like fatigue, high blood pressure, or liver problems are possible.
