Could a red wine compound beat plaque? new trial tests resveratrol mouthwash
NCT ID NCT07393802
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a mouthwash made from resveratrol (a compound found in grapes) can reduce dental plaque buildup. Twenty healthy adults will rinse with the resveratrol mouthwash, a standard chlorhexidine mouthwash, or a placebo, and then avoid brushing for 24 hours to see how much plaque forms. The goal is to find a gentler alternative to chlorhexidine, which can cause side effects like staining.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Resveratrol-based mouthwash (Oroxil®)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a natural alternative to chlorhexidine mouthwash for controlling dental plaque.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 20 healthy participants, so results may not apply to the general population. The effect is measured over just 24 hours, so long-term benefits or risks are unknown.
