Steam power against diabetes: new device zaps gut to control blood sugar
NCT ID NCT07355270
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early study tests a device that uses radiofrequency energy to create vapor and ablate (remove) a small part of the upper intestine. The idea is that this might improve how the body handles sugar. The study will enroll 20 adults with type 2 diabetes to see if the procedure is safe and tolerable, and if it helps lower blood sugar levels over six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Radiofrequency vapor ablation device (Aqua Medical RF Vapor System)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, non-surgical way to help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, potentially reducing the need for medication.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 20 people. The main goal is safety, not yet proof of effectiveness. The procedure involves ablating intestinal tissue, which carries risks like pain or injury.
