Breathing your way to better football performance — a trial tests the idea
NCT ID NCT07737379
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates whether a four-week respiratory training program — involving diaphragmatic breathing and gradually increased resistance — can improve reaction time, agility, speed, and endurance in young football players. Fifty healthy boys aged 13 to 15 who have played football for at least two years will take part. Their performance will be measured using light-sensor reaction tests, agility drills, sprints, and a shuttle-run endurance test before and after the training.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- respiratory training (breathing exercises with progressive resistance)
- What this could lead to
- If breathing exercises improve reaction time and agility, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to boost sports performance in young athletes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial in healthy boys, so results may not apply to other groups. The training effect may be small or not translate to real-game performance.
