Can a blood pressure cuff trick help cancer surgery patients heal better?

NCT ID NCT03535623

First seen Jun 14, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a simple procedure called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) could improve blood flow and healing in head and neck cancer patients who had prior radiation and were undergoing reconstructive surgery. RIPC involves briefly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm to temporarily reduce blood flow, which may protect tissues elsewhere. The study included 44 adults and measured oxygen levels and temperature in the reconstructed tissue, as well as any complications.
