Could a blood pressure cuff protect your heart after a heart attack?
NCT ID NCT07181356
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a simple, non-drug procedure called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) can help people recover better after a heart attack. RIPC involves briefly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm or leg to restrict blood flow, then releasing it, repeated over several cycles. The trial will enroll 2,146 people who have had a heart attack and will follow them for years to see if regular RIPC sessions reduce the risk of major problems like another heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) - a procedure using a blood pressure cuff to temporarily restrict blood flow to an arm or leg
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple, drug-free procedure could become a standard way to reduce the risk of another heart attack, stroke, or heart failure after a first heart attack.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but the procedure is still experimental for this use. It may not reduce heart and brain events as hoped, and some people may not tolerate the cuff inflation.
