Could a blood pressure cuff help fight septic shock?
NCT ID NCT07273942
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a non-invasive arm cuff procedure, called remote ischemic postconditioning, can reduce deaths in adults with septic shock. The cuff is inflated and deflated in cycles to briefly restrict blood flow, which may trigger protective effects. 720 ICU patients will be randomly assigned to receive the procedure or standard care, and survival at 90 days will be compared.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
remote ischemic conditioning (arm cuff inflation/deflation cycles)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, cheap, non-invasive way to reduce deaths from septic shock.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but still early for this specific condition. Previous benefits seen in other diseases may not apply to septic shock, and the intervention may have no effect on survival.
